National Heart Month 1

We know that the added stress to family members who care for loved ones is profound.  They often suffer from caregiver burnout with high blood pressure, fatigue, loss of sleep, and weight loss.  We frequently see family caregivers ignore their own health while caring for loved ones.  Keeping your heart healthy by de-stressing, and having small lifestyle changes SIGNIFICANTLY reduces the impact of caregiving on your health.

February is National Heart Month and we would like to spread awareness on what you can do to stay one step ahead in living a heart healthy lifestyle, especially for caregivers. There are many areas of daily life where we can incorporate techniques that give our hearts the necessary nutrition and physical activity to be strong.  National Heart Month is the perfect time to get started with a healthy heart lifestyle and reducing caregiver stress.  When we take care of our hearts as part of our self-care, we set an example for those around us to do the same.

Join us at Family Caregivers Network in raising awareness by sharing with a loved one how they can improve their heart health.  Follow us on social media this month (Facebook, Instagram, Linkedin, Twitter) for our heart health recipes, resources and tips on having a healthy heart.

Here are some examples on how to keep YOU and your HEART healthy…

NUTRITION

Keep a balanced diet and stay hydrated daily. We can naturally decrease the amount of plaque in our heart just by getting the right vitamins and nutrients into our daily diet. Speak to your doctor about taking the right vitamins and diet for your self-care plan.

ACTIVITY

Being active and maintaining a healthy weight helps in strengthening the heart muscle. Know your numbers, blood pressure, weight, number of footsteps you do in a day. Create a self-care checklist for the week with target numbers to achieve.

HEALTHY HABITS

Quit smoking. Countless studies have shown the damage that nicotine and tobacco will do to the heart; coronary artery disease and high blood pressure are just two examples.
