August News!

On August 3rd we celebrate

National Watermelon Day!

Stay Hydrated,

Eat More

In August we take a look at the hydrating benefits of Watermelon.

Did you know that watermelons consist of 92% water? They are fantastic for hydration. In the hot summer months, eating just a few slices of watermelon can be equivalent to drinking an extra glass of water!

With summer outdoor activities comes water loss and risk of dehydration. Getting enough to drink is important whether you’re walking, playing or just sitting in the sun. Having the right amount of water in your body helps your heart, kidneys, muscles, and your mind. It is important to put yourself on a schedule to drink fluids when you are enjoying summer activities. Remember, if you get thirsty, you’re already dehydrated.

Eating fruits and vegetables that are high in water content is also a good way to get fluids when you are out in the sun.

The top foods with high amounts of water are:

  • cucumbers (97% water)
  • tomatoes (95% water)
  • watermelon (92% water)

So whether you’re a caregiver, a patient or a family member, make watermelon your choice of fruit and stay hydrated!
